Abstract

The presence of high levels of stress and disruptions to daily routines contribute to various mental health problems. The incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is influenced by the severity of the trauma experienced, its sudden and unexpected occurrence, personality traits, injury or loss of family members, and post-traumatic recovery characteristics. After the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred on February 6, 2023, in Kahramanmaraş, there may be an increase in the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder. Therefore, our research aims to determine the impact of the earthquake on adolescent students who are athletes and their coping strategies following trauma. The data was collected through Google Forms. 372 participants were asked earthquake-related questions, demographics, The Revised Child Impact of Event Scale (CRIES) and the Earthquake Coping Strategies Scale (ECSS) were utilized. The results showed higher CRIES and ECSS perceptions in student athletes aged 17–19. Male athlete students had higher CRIES perceptions than female athlete students, while female athlete students had higher ECSS perceptions than male athlete students. According to the results of the correlation analysis, a significant negative relationship was found between CRIES and ECSS. Another finding from the study was that age, gender and losing family members have a major impact on CRIES perception and raise the likelihood of developing PTSD. As a result, these findings will be helpful for health services in the psychological development of student athletes who survived the earthquake and the precautions to be taken in advance.
