Abstract
There are both national and state strategic plans for reducing risk in suicide and bullying prevention. This chapter identifies parallel and complementary prevention strategies in the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP) and national efforts to reduce bullying. At the state level, there is a diverse array of suicide prevention programs and strategies. This review concludes that there are many areas of overlap in prevention policies, and both areas need improved access to mental health services and better data-collection systems to inform public policy. Education and training are needed to help mental health providers, parents, administrators, and teachers to adapt principles of gatekeeper training to situations involving either bullying or suicide. Policy-makers are advised to support evidence-based prevention and intervention practices and research to improve those practices. School communities are encouraged to protect students from bullying and harassment and to create positive school climates that prevent peer victimization.
