This book is the result of thirty-plus years in the classroom and equal time thinking and writing about teaching. I have come to the conclusion that we teach students much about science but little about caring and the art inherent in practice. The basis of much of our existing professional education is still promulgated through an outmoded model of lecture and textbook and memorization. It neither respects the individuality of those we teach nor mirrors the world in which we live, where mere facts and information mutate in an instant. Change is required. We need to make education more relevant, relational, and reflective.
Professional education, as well as professional practice, involves a deliberate, conscious, and disciplined use of self. Your self as teacher and as practitioner is the medium of transmission. The essential constituent of all professional encounters is self, composed of personality, knowledge, values, skills, and culture.
The optimal teacher and the optimal practitioner display strengths in both rational systemization and empathy. This allows them to render precise assessment and effective intervention as they make others feel heard, understood, and cared about. The Use of Self: The Essence of Professional Education posits that the rudiments of the professional encounter between teacher and student should substantially model ones that students are encouraged to employ with clients. As you reinforce students practice efforts through knowledge-building, be aware that their reactions, thoughts, and feelings are equally integral to their learning.
