Abstract
This chapter discusses the dynamics of the California Current and its role in governing high marine productivity. The California Current brings cold deep water upward to the surface along the coast. This upwelling of water from below the surface brings nutrients used by microscopic algae to grow and thus provide nourishment to zooplankton that feeds the fishes. The chapter also suggests that during the last two decades of the twentieth century, ocean warming in California resulted in drastic effects on the biology of the sea, such as fluctuations in sardine populations.
