I was exceptionally lucky to receive the advice and support of a number of academics while I worked on this book. I am especially grateful to Michel Hockx for being such an inspirational teacher during my studies at SOAS, University of London, and in the years since; and to Margaret Hillenbrand, who has been so generous with her time and her comments on my research. Julia Lovell’s translations of Zhu Wen first sparked my interest in contemporary Chinese literature, long before I ever thought of studying it in a formal capacity. I thank her for her advice on my project in its various incarnations, and for the material she has kindly shared with me.
Besides providing inspiration through their body of work, both Derek Hird and Geng Song have been extremely kind in encouraging my interest in contemporary Chinese masculinity. I am grateful to both of them for this, and for drawing my attention to this series. I would also like to thank the editorial team at Hong Kong University Press for all they have done to bring this book to print.
