Editorial Board
The Journal of Pediatric Psychology Editor and Associate Editors are providing a positionality statement about the group in an effort to be transparent about our backgrounds and the lenses through which we view research and research processes. We are White, Black, and Asian able-bodied individuals who are cisgender and heterosexual or gay/lesbian. We represent various religions and spiritual orientations, including Christian, Atheist, Jewish, and Agnostic. We represent Generation X and Millennials. Professionally, we have PhDs in clinical psychology or developmental psychology and are from doctoral programs with varied emphases including those with and without a traditional pediatric psychology focus. Our academic ranks include Associate and Full Professors. Many of us have received federally funded grants. Our scholarship uses both qualitative and quantitative methods. We strive toward antidiscrimination in our editorial efforts.
Editor:
Avani Modi, PhD, is a Professor and Interim Division Director in Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati-College of Medicine. She is the Director of the Center for Adherence and Self-Management at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Her research focuses on adherence and self-management in chronic conditions, including epilepsy, kidney transplantation, and bipolar disorder. She has several grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health evaluating behavioral and family-based interventions to improve adherence and outcomes. Associate Editors:
Katie Devine, PhD, MPH is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. She serves as the Chief for the Pediatric Population Science, Outcomes, and Disparities Research Section within the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. Her research focuses on the psychosocial aspects of pediatric, adolescent, and young adult cancer survivorship, including patient and family adaptation to illness, adherence to medical recommendations and survivorship care, transition from pediatric to adult healthcare, and self-management and health promotion for survivors. Kurt A. Freeman, PhD, ABPP is a Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). He holds the Fred Fax Professorship for Pediatric Excellence. Dr. Freeman directs the OHSU Institute on Development and Disability, which is comprised of approximately 150 faculty and staff dedicated to improving the lives of those with disabilities and special health needs through excellence in clinical care, scholarship, public health and advocacy, and education and training of professionals. His research interests are non-condition specific and focus on behavioral interventions, parenting strategies, adherence, primary care psychology, and continence/elimination disorder issues experienced by those with and without disabilities.
Marisa Hilliard PhD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. She directs the Resilience and Diabetes (RAD) Behavioral Research Lab, which primarily focuses on the application of positive psychology and the science of health behavior change to improve psychosocial, behavioral, and health outcomes of youth and young adults with type 1 diabetes and their families. Chad D. Jensen, PhD, is a Professor of Psychology at Brigham Young University where he serves as Director of Clinical Training in Clinical Psychology. His research program focuses on health neuroscience and health promotion related to modifiable child health behaviors, including eating, physical activity, and sleep, with the goal of translating findings from neural and behavioral sciences into clinical practice in pediatric psychology.
Emily Law, PhD, is a Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics at University of Kansas Medical Center. Her research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and is focused on the development and evaluation of digital health interventions for youth with chronic pain who have comorbid conditions such as poor sleep. In addition to her research activities, Dr. Law provides clinical service to children and adolescents with headache disorders in the Multidisciplinary Headache Program at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Cecelia Valrie, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology, Health Psychology Program at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). She is also the director of the VCU Health and Development Lab and Chair of the Culture, Race, and Health Transdisciplinary Core of the VCU Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry, and Innovation. Her research interests include improving the health outcomes of youth with sickle cell disease and Black youth, with a focus on understanding and addressing persistent pain, sleep problems, and health inequities. Andrea Fidler, PhD, MPH is a T32 Postdoctoral Fellow in Child Behavior and Nutrition at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Her research broadly focuses on understanding and improving children's sleep. She is particularly interested in sleep within the context of pediatric hospitalizations. She currently serves as a Trainee Representative on SPP’s Membership Committee. She was previously a Training Program Dissemination Co-Chair on the SPP Student Advisory Board. Kelly Rea, MS is a predoctoral psychology intern in the Department of Pediatrics, C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan Health System. Kelly’s research interests include how psychosocial functioning evolves over time among children with end-stage organ failure and pediatric solid organ transplant recipients, with particular interest in unique periods of vulnerability, such as during the transition from pediatric to adult healthcare, for which she received a 2021 Elizabeth Munsterberg Koppitz Fellowship through the American Psychological Foundation to complete her dissertation. Alexandra Monzon, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Center for Healthcare Delivery Science at Nemours Children’s Health – Florida. Her research has focused on caregiver functioning and individual factors that impact health behaviors (i.e., sleep, nutrition) in youth with type 1 diabetes. She is interested in utilizing innovative technologies to measure individual factors and outcomes of interest as they relate to health disparities in groups experiencing barriers to care during postdoc. Karen Dimentstein, MS, MPH is a fourth-year Clinical Psychology PhD student at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL who completed her MPH at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2019. Karen serves on the SPP Student Advisory Board as a Podcast Co-Chair and as a Trainee Member-at-Large on the Diabetes Special Interest Group Board. Her research focuses on health disparities in type 1 diabetes treatment, adherence, and outcomes. She is also interested in public health, health promotion, and health policy. Caroline Roberts, PhD is a clinical and research pediatric psychology post-doctoral fellow at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital. She is the current Research Student Representative for the American Psychological Association- Division 54 Society of Pediatric Psychology Pediatric Gastroenterology Special Interest Group. She previously served as a SPP Student Advisory Board Member, Co-Chair of the Network of Campus Representatives, and member of the Journal of Pediatric Psychology Student Journal Club. Her research focuses on youth illness management and psychosocial adjustment to chronic illnesses and the role of technology, health communication, social support, and family variables.
