https://github.com/paul-hammant/swing_component_testing/ shows Marathon in use (previously MarathonMan). It's Maven project too, so should be easy for you to copy bits and pieces to make the first test.

Setting up Marathon is so easy - https://github.com/paul-hammant/swing_component_testing/blob/master/src/test/java/demo/CoupledCounterPairComponentTests.java#L31 - thence afterwards it behaves like the industry standard Selenium-WebDriver.
