MetaMap is a highly configurable program developed to map biomedical text to the UMLS Metathesaurus or, equivalently, to discover Metathesaurus concepts referred to in text. MetaMap uses a knowledge-intensive approach based on symbolic, natural-language processing (NLP) and computational-linguistic techniques.

NLM requires that users conform to the following restrictions:

Interactive Requests via Web or API: No more than 10 requests per minute per IP address. The text to be processed Interactively must not exceed 10,000 characters in length per request.

Batch Requests via Web or API: No more than 2 requests active in the Scheduler Queue at one time per IP address. The Batch facility provides a Batch Job Status Window allowing you to monitor the progress of your batch while it is running.
