By the time man became socialized millennia ago, he undoubtedly began studying himself and his society, and the study continues because it must. Eisenberg1 states the need succinctly: “Understanding the nature of man and his works has become a precondition for the survival of our species, as well as for the enhancement…of human individuality.” He is convinced that to be human is to be something more than an instinctual animal. To believe otherwise is to deny hope of building a better world, to deny hope that “mankind can become fully human [and thus] attain humanity.”
