Dear AJPM&R Readers,

Several decades ago, musculoskeletal (MSK) medicine became an integral part of the practice of PM&R. The diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with musculoskeletal conditions is now a fundamental competency in PM&R residency training. This is congruent with the fact that more than 60% of the 2.41 billion people in the world who could benefit from rehabilitation have health conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system. But how well do we prepare medical students who will, many of them independent of their specialty, treat patients with such conditions? The need to strengthen the teaching of MSK medicine in medical school is analyzed in the "Editor's pick" of this issue of the AJPM&R. A total of five articles included in this issue address various questions concerning the care of patients with MSK health conditions. Three of these articles are related to the effect of osteoarthritis of the cervical spine, shoulder, or knee, one cadaveric study looks at the biomechanics of the foot after plantar fascia release, and a study in the special Para Sport & Paralympic Sports Section looks at muscle injuries in elite para-athletes. Emphasis on MSK medicine is not only interesting but important for the development of our specialty.

Happy reading!
