Commonly used alcohol-based mouthwash brand disrupts the balance of your oral microbiome, scientists say

Researchers have identified a significant change in composition and abundance of bacteria in study participants’ oral microbiomes after using a popular brand of alcohol-based mouthwash.
The oral microbiome is the community of bacteria that live in the mouth, they help us digest our food and keep our mouth healthy.
Researchers found that two species of opportunistic bacteria were significantly more abundant in the mouth after daily use of the alcohol-based mouthwash,Fusobacterium nucleatumandStreptococcus anginosus.
These two bacteria have been previously linked to several diseases including gum disease and oesophageal and colorectal cancers.
Although results show potentially damaging alterations to the microbiome, researchers urge that the study results do not mean that the general public should no longer use mouthwash.

Professor John Gareth Morris: a tribute

The Microbiology Society is saddened to report that Professor John Gareth Morris CBE DPhil FIBiol FLSW FRS, passed away aged 91 on December 2023 in Llandogo, Monmouthshire.

Gareth joined the Microbiology Society – then the Society for General Microbiology in 1955 – and published the several papers from his PhD studies in the Journal of General Microbiology, as well as many later papers over the course of his career. He also served on the Editorial Board of JGM (1970-74) and also on the Society’s Council. In 1997, he was awarded Honorary Membership of the Society.

Centre for Microbial Interactions: A Q&A with Keni Duguma

The Microbiology Society set up this internship to support our members developing the new Centre for Microbial Interactions at Norwich Research Park. During the internship, Keni Duguma worked with colleagues at the Microbiology Society, and supported our members in Norwich to establish a stronger identity of the microbiology community in Norfolk. Our former President Judith Armitage has been working to help the Norfolk-based microbiologists strengthen the links between the vibrant group of researchers based in Norwich.

Professor Michael Goodfellow (1941–2024): a tribute

The Microbiology Society is saddened to report the death of Mike Goodfellow on 8 March 2024, following a short illness. He was 83 and still highly active. Mike was the preeminent authority on the systematics of the actinomycetes (now formally named Actinomycetota Goodfellow 2021) and was committed to using systematics as the framework for ecological understanding and effective bioprospecting of these hugely important bacteria.
