Every possible oligonucleotide with length ≤6 was considered. The occurrences of the oligonucleotides and their reverse complementary counterparts were pooled together for each gene. The correlation between the log of the oligonucleotide frequency and Inline graphic was calculated and ranked based on the absolute value. For the human tissue data, the average Inline graphic across the nine tissues was used. For the yeast data, the samples were prepared using random hexamer or oligo(dT) primers. For the mouse data, the average Inline graphic across three tissues were used. The hydrolysis of RNA was performed before cDNA priming for the mouse data.
