Biography

Inyeong Choi, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Cell Biology at Emory University School of Medicine. Prior to arriving at Emory, Dr. Choi was Research Associate at Yale University.

Dr. Choi is a member of the Cell and Molecular Biology Research Program at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Education

Dr. Choi received his PhD from University of Wisconsin in Madison. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

Research

The research in Dr. Choi's laboratory is focused on the mechanism of cellular and systemic pH regulation in the neural, cardiovascular and renal systems. In particular, they study sodium bicarbonate transporters that move bicarbonate across cell membranes and compensate H+. Bicarbonate is the essential buffer component that helps maintain blood pH at physiological ranges, and plasma bicarbonate levels are primarily regulated by the kidneys. Abnormally low bicarbonate levels in the blood causes metabolic acidosis that leads to neurological and cardiac complications. Understanding the mechanism of bicarbonate transporter function in these organs is of clinical importance because abnormalities in these transporters are associated with renal tubular acidosis, visual defects, seizure, hypertension and cancer development.
