Sun's out, guns out! Dr. Bich-May Nguyen, a family physician in the Department of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences at the University of Houston Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine explains how to stay safe under the sun!

“Protection from ultraviolet or UV rays from the sun is important year-round. UV rays shine on cloudy days and reflect off surfaces like water, sand, cement, and snow. ”

“First, wear a hat with a wide brim to protect your head and neck. ”

“Second, wear UV 400-protected sunglasses to block almost 100% of UVA and UVB rays. ”

“Third, wear clothing that covers arms and legs. If you'll be exposed for long periods of time, consider sun protective clothing with a UV protection factor or UPF of 50+. ”

“Finally, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor or SPF of 30+. ”
