1.

Guanidines

A family of iminourea derivatives. The parent compound has been isolated from mushrooms, corn germ, rice hulls, mussels, earthworms, and turnip juice. Derivatives may have antiviral and antifungal properties.

2.

guanoxan [Supplementary Concept]

was MH 1976-92 (see under GUANIDINES 1976-90); use GUANIDINES to search GUANOXAN 1976-92; antihypertensive agent similar in its mechanism of action to guanethidine; may cause liver damage

Date introduced: June 8, 1992

3.

Verbesina

A plant genus of the family ASTERACEAE. Members contain galegine (GUANIDINES).

Year introduced: 2003

4.

Galega

A plant genus of the family FABACEAE that contains galegine (GUANIDINES). Most of the other species have been reclassified to TEPHROSIA; a few to ASTRAGALUS PLANT; and INDIGOFERA.

Year introduced: 2002

5.

Pinacidil

A guanidine that opens POTASSIUM CHANNELS producing direct peripheral vasodilatation of the ARTERIOLES. It reduces BLOOD PRESSURE and peripheral resistance and produces fluid retention. (Martindale The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 31st ed)

Year introduced: 1999

6.

3-Iodobenzylguanidine

A guanidine analog with specific affinity for tissues of the sympathetic nervous system and related tumors. The radiolabeled forms are used as antineoplastic agents and radioactive imaging agents. (Merck Index, 12th ed) MIBG serves as a neuron-blocking agent which has a strong affinity for, and retention in, the adrenal medulla and also inhibits ADP-ribosyltransferase.

Year introduced: 1998

7.

Guanidine

A strong organic base existing primarily as guanidium ions at physiological pH. It is found in the urine as a normal product of protein metabolism. It is also used in laboratory research as a protein denaturant. (From Martindale, the Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed and Merck Index, 12th ed) It is also used in the treatment of myasthenia and as a fluorescent probe in HPLC.

Year introduced: 1998

8.

Gabexate

A serine proteinase inhibitor used therapeutically in the treatment of pancreatitis, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and as a regional anticoagulant for hemodialysis. The drug inhibits the hydrolytic effects of thrombin, plasmin, and kallikrein, but not of chymotrypsin and aprotinin.

Year introduced: 1992

9.

Guanfacine

A centrally acting antihypertensive agent with specificity towards ADRENERGIC ALPHA-2 RECEPTORS.

Year introduced: 1991

10.

Robenidine

An anticoccidial agent mainly for poultry.

Year introduced: 1991(1975)

11.

Nitrosoguanidines

Nitrosylated derivatives of guanidine. They are used as MUTAGENS in MOLECULAR BIOLOGY research.

Year introduced: 1973(1971)

12.

Netropsin

A basic polypeptide isolated from Streptomyces netropsis. It is cytotoxic and its strong, specific binding to A-T areas of DNA is useful to genetics research.

Year introduced: 1991(1977)

13.

Methylguanidine

A product of putrefaction. Poisonous.

Year introduced: 1991(1975)

14.

Homoarginine

Year introduced: 1991(1975)

15.

Guanabenz

An alpha-2 selective adrenergic agonist used as an antihypertensive agent.

Year introduced: 1991(1975)

16.

Cimetidine

A histamine congener, it competitively inhibits HISTAMINE binding to HISTAMINE H2 RECEPTORS. Cimetidine has a range of pharmacological actions. It inhibits GASTRIC ACID secretion, as well as PEPSIN and GASTRIN output.

Year introduced: 1984(1978)

17.

Bethanidine

A guanidinium antihypertensive agent that acts by blocking adrenergic transmission. The precise mode of action is not clear.

Year introduced: 1991(1975)

18.

Agmatine

Decarboxylated arginine, isolated from several plant and animal sources, e.g., pollen, ergot, herring sperm, octopus muscle.

Year introduced: 1991(1975)

19.
