1.

Catalase

An oxidoreductase that catalyzes the conversion of HYDROGEN PEROXIDE to water and oxygen. It is present in many animal cells. A deficiency of this enzyme results in ACATALASIA.

2.

Acatalasia

A rare autosomal recessive disorder resulting from the absence of CATALASE activity. Though usually asymptomatic, a syndrome of oral ulcerations and gangrene may be present.

Year introduced: 2000

3.

catalase-polyethylene glycol [Supplementary Concept]

Date introduced: September 12, 1991

4.

catalase-peroxidase, bacteria [Supplementary Concept]

has both catalase (dismutation of H2O2 to O2 + H2O) and peroxidase (uses H2O2 to oxidize other cpds) activity; CpeB also has manganese peroxidase activity; from Rhodobacter, Synechococcus & cyanobacteria; amino acid sequence in first source; GenBank X71420

Date introduced: July 9, 1993

5.

catalase-peroxidase, Haloarcula [Supplementary Concept]

archeal enzyme; has both catalase (dismutation of H2O2 to O2 and H2O) and peroxidase (uses H2O2 to oxidize other compounds) activity; amino acid sequence in first source; GenBank Y16851

Date introduced: April 6, 1999

6.

polyhemoglobin-superoxide dismutase-catalase [Supplementary Concept]

intermolecularly cross-linked hemoglobin, superoxide dismutase and catalase; prevents methemoglobin formation and iron release

Date introduced: April 5, 1994
