Obesity
A status with BODY WEIGHT that is grossly above the recommended standards, usually due to accumulation of excess FATS in the body. The standards may vary with age, sex, genetic or cultural background. In the BODY MASS INDEX, a BMI greater than 30.0 kg/m2 is considered obese, and a BMI greater than 40.0 kg/m2 is considered morbidly obese (MORBID OBESITY).
Pediatric Obesity
BODY MASS INDEX in children (ages 2-12) and in adolescents (ages 13-18) that is grossly above the recommended cut-off for a specific age and sex. For infants less than 2 years of age, obesity is determined based on standard weight-for-length percentile measures.

Obesity, Abdominal
A condition of having excess fat in the abdomen. Abdominal obesity is typically defined as waist circumferences of 40 inches or more in men and 35 inches or more in women. Abdominal obesity raises the risk of developing disorders, such as DIABETES; HYPERTENSION; and METABOLIC SYNDROME.

Anti-Obesity Agents
Agents that increase energy expenditure and weight loss by neural and metabolic regulation.

Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome
HYPOVENTILATION syndrome in very obese persons with excessive ADIPOSE TISSUE around the ABDOMEN and DIAPHRAGM. It is characterized by diminished to absent ventilatory chemoresponsiveness; chronic HYPOXIA; HYPERCAPNIA; POLYCYTHEMIA; and long periods of sleep during day and night (HYPERSOMNOLENCE). It is a condition often related to OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA but can occur separately.
Year introduced: 2006 (1970)
Obesity, Morbid
The condition of weighing two, three, or more times the ideal weight, so called because it is associated with many serious and life-threatening disorders. In the BODY MASS INDEX, morbid obesity is defined as having a BMI greater than 40.0 kg/m2.
Year introduced: 1987
Obesity Paradox
An observation that high BODY MASS INDEX is sometimes associated with lower CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE mortality in certain population, e.g., ELDERLY.
Year introduced: 2023
Obesity, Maternal
BODY MASS INDEX in PREGNANT WOMEN that is excessively above the recommended cut-off.
Year introduced: 2020
Obesity Management
An integrated professional approach to screening, evaluation, control, and reduction of abnormal WEIGHT GAIN.
Year introduced: 2018
Obesity, Metabolically Benign
A sub-PHENOTYPE of obese individuals who have a risk for CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES between that of healthy individuals with normal weight and unhealthy individuals with obesity.

Ayazi syndrome [Supplementary Concept]

Cohen syndrome [Supplementary Concept]
A rare autosomal recessive disorder that occurs primarily in the Finnish population where it is characterized by non-progressive mild to severe psychomotor retardation, microcephaly, characteristic facial features (high-arched or wave-shaped eyelids, a short lip, thick hair, and low hairline), childhood hypotonia and joint laxity, progressive retinochoroidal dystrophy, myopia, intermittent isolated NEUTROPENIA, and a cheerful disposition. Obesity, retinochoroidal dystrophy, and neutropenia are far less common in non-Finnish patients. Mutations in the VPS13B gene have been identified. OMIM: 216550

FTO protein, mouse [Supplementary Concept]
bioinformatics analysis shows FTO shares sequence motifs with Fe(II)- & 2-oxoglutarate-dependent oxygenases; recombinant Fto catalyzes the Fe(II)- & 2OG-dependent demethylation of 3-methylthymine in single-stranded DNA; Fto mRNA is most abundant in brain; RefSeq NM_011936

Weight Prejudice
Negative attitudes towards and beliefs about others because of their weight. These negative attitudes are manifested by stereotypes and/or prejudice towards people with weight over or under a cultural norm.
Alpha-Ketoglutarate-Dependent Dioxygenase FTO
A dioxygenase that repairs alkylated DNA and RNA by oxidative demethylation. It has highest activity towards single-stranded RNA containing 3-methyluracil, followed by SINGLE-STRANDED DNA containing 3-methylthymine and specifically demethylates N(6)-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA, the most common internal modification of MESSENGER RNA (mRNA) in higher EUKARYOTES. It contributes to the regulation of the global metabolic rate, energy HOMEOSTASIS, as well as body fat accumulation by regulating the differentiation of ADIPOCYTES into BROWN FAT CELLS or WHITE FAT CELLS.
