1.

beta-Glucosidase

An exocellulase with specificity for a variety of beta-D-glycoside substrates. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of terminal non-reducing residues in beta-D-glucosides with release of GLUCOSE.

Year introduced: 1992

2.

Glucosylceramidase

A glycosidase that hydrolyzes a glucosylceramide to yield free ceramide plus glucose. Deficiency of this enzyme leads to abnormally high concentrations of glucosylceramide in the brain in GAUCHER DISEASE. EC 3.2.1.45.

Year introduced: 1991(1975)

3.

Gaucher Disease

An autosomal recessive disorder caused by a deficiency of acid beta-glucosidase (GLUCOSYLCERAMIDASE) leading to intralysosomal accumulation of glycosylceramide mainly in cells of the MONONUCLEAR PHAGOCYTE SYSTEM. The characteristic Gaucher cells, glycosphingolipid-filled HISTIOCYTES, displace normal cells in BONE MARROW and visceral organs causing skeletal deterioration, hepatosplenomegaly, and organ dysfunction. There are several subtypes based on the presence and severity of neurological involvement.

Year introduced: 2000(1966)

4.

Saposins

A group of four homologous sphingolipid activator proteins that are formed from proteolytic cleavage of a common protein precursor molecule referred to as prosaposin.

Year introduced: 2005(1977)

5.

Date introduced: April 24, 2001

7.

Glucan 1,4-beta-Glucosidase

An exocellulase with specificity for the hydrolysis of 1,4-beta-glucosidic linkages of 1,4-beta-D-glucans resulting in successive removal of GLUCOSE units.

Year introduced: 2004

8.

beta-glucosidase aggregating factor [Supplementary Concept]

The results showed that a region spanning 11 amino acids (Ile(72)-Thr(82)) on Glu1 is essential and sufficient for BGAF binding

Date introduced: December 30, 2009

9.

catalyzes the hydrolysis of dhurrin

Date introduced: August 7, 2000

12.

raucaffricine beta-glucosidase [Supplementary Concept]

highly specific, some other ajmalan glucoside alkaloids are hydrolysed more slowly; reaction: raucaffricine + H2O = vomilenine + D-glucose; EC number in first source; has been sequenced

Date introduced: July 9, 1999

13.

18.

Glucan 1,3-beta-Glucosidase

An exocellulase with specificity for 1,3-beta-D-glucasidic linkages. It catalyzes hydrolysis of beta-D-glucose units from the non-reducing ends of 1,3-beta-D-glucans, releasing GLUCOSE.

Year introduced: 2004
