Science City Day 2024

On 1 June 2024, the first Science City Day took place. More than 15,000 people came to Bahrenfeld to discover the new science district in the west of Hamburg. DESY, Universität Hamburg, and many further institutions on campus were there with a lot of activities, showcasing their top-level research. PIER and PIER PLUS were also present with an information stand.

While adults learned about the different joint activities and projects of DESY, Universität Hamburg and further partners in innovation, education and research, the children were entertained by throwing tin cans and building plastic brick models of things related to the research topics of PIER PLUS.

PIER PLUS Workshop on "Green Mobility" at Hamburg University of Technology

On May 13, 2024, PIER Climate-Friendly Mobility, under the initiative of the two spokespersons Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Kaltschmitt (TUHH) and Prof. Dr. Thomas Klassen (Hereon/HSU), invited to a workshop on "Green Mobility" at Hamburg University of Technology.

Scientists from various PIER PLUS partners discussed energy-relevant topics, including environmental and economic assessments, legal frameworks, "green" fuels, transport logistics, and more potential measures for more environmentally friendly mobility.

The event provided a platform for the exchange of ideas and collaboration among the scientists from the PIER PLUS partners to advance interdisciplinary research ideas in the field of sustainable mobility.

PIER Day 2022

On November 18, 2022, the PIER DAY took place on the Bahrenfeld Campus. The aim of the event was to present the recent and current joint research activities of the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) and the Universität Hamburg (UHH). In addition, future perspectives of the research cooperation between DESY and UHH were discussed in the context of future infrastructure and campus development (e.g. PETRA IV and Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld).

The cooperation between UHH and DESY in PIER deals mainly with the fields of particle physics, nano- and photon science as well as infection and structural biology.

Science Prize of Northern Germany goes to Material Scientists in Hamburg

The CIMMS (Center For Integrated Multiscale Materials Systems) has won the Science Prize for Northern Germany. This is the second time in a row the prize is won by a collaborative project from Hamburg. Here, researchers from the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), Universität Hamburg (UHH), the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon are working together at topics concerning materials science.

“There are more viruses in the sea than stars in the universe”

Marine biologist Dr. Luisa Listmann from the Plankton Ecology and Evolution research group at Universität Hamburg is conducting research in collaboration with a colleague from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon GmbH. Seed funding for research is aimed at supporting these kinds of collaborative projects by research institutions in the greater Hamburg region.

One reason Universität Hamburg, northern Germany’s largest research institution, was named a University of Excellence was in recognition of its role as a “flagship university.” True to this concept, the University would like to further develop and fortify cooperation among various universities and non-university research institutions in the greater Hamburg region.
