STIS Cycle-30 Calibration Phase-1 Template Last Revised: May 10, 2022 Proposal ID: (previously 16559 in Cycle 29) Title: MAMA Sensitivity and Focus Monitor PI: Svea Hernandez Co-I(s): --------------------------------------------------------------------------- # Orbit estimates are TOTAL for all of cycle-30; assume 53 weeks) Total Prime Orbits: 12 External Parallel Orbits: 0 Internals or no-impact orbits: 0 Comments on orbit estimate: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- # This section should be written with a GO audience in mind -- use # Calibration plans in WFPC-2 handbook as a guide. Purpose: Monitor sensitivity of each MAMA grating mode to detect any change due to contamination or other causes. Also monitor the STIS focus in a spectroscopic and an imaging mode. Description: Obtain exposures in each of the 2 low-resolution MAMA spectroscopic modes every 4 months, in each of the 2 medium-resolution modes once a year, and in each of the 4 echelle modes every 3 months, using unique calibration standards for each mode, and ratio the results to the first observations to monitor changes in sensitivity vs time. In addition, each L-mode sequence will be preceded by a CCD/F28X50OII image, two spectroscopic ACQ/PEAKs with the CCD/G230LB and crossed linear patterns, and two CCD/G230LB spectra, with the purpose of measuring the focus (PSF across the dispersion as a function of UV wavelength). Each M-mode sequence will be preceded by a CCD/F28X50OII direct image also to monitor the focus. The E-mode visits will obtain continuous parallel WFC3 imaging data to monitor focus on orbital timescales. Based on analyses of the Cycle 27, 28 and 29 programs, the focus monitor observations may be adjusted if necessary, but without an increase in orbits. Accuracy: Minimum S/N of 50 per resolution element at the wavelength of least sensitivity for L modes, and at the central wavelengths for M and E modes. 10% for focus changes, i.e FWHM of the profile across the dispersion. Comments on Accuracy: Products: Interim reports and ISR on sensitivity monitor. Updates to TDSTAB for pipeline corrections as needed. ISR on focus monitors. If the focus quality is found to degrade significantly, a separate program to characterize the degradation may be implemented. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- # Link to Cycle 30 Science # Use the GO + GTO Phase 1 exposure listing and derived statistics posted on WWW. needs of this proposal? Scheduling: low-res modes every 4 months; med-res modes 2x per year; echelle modes every 3 months Prerequisites: PDB update? On-board table update? # Special Requirements: Real time? N Special commanding? Yes--Monthly MAMA offsets are to be canceled and centering returned to nominal for all exposures in this program. Quick Data turnaround? N Special timing required? N Other? N Describe (& justify) special requirements: Eliminate a spatial sensitivity variable to permit tracking of any small temporal variations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- # Analysis Plan Expected FTE weeks for analysis: 3 for sensitivity analysis, 2 weeks for ISR, 3 for focus. Required turnaround on analysis (weeks): 4 for sensitivity, 4 for focus Data volume (Mb needed for analysis): 300 for sensitivity, 200 for focus Special software needed for analysis? (Describe): IRAF/IDL/Python scripts in place and under development. WFC3 team's scripts for PSF metrics. Description of analysis plans: (1) TDS - Prepare comparative plots relative to baseline within 4 weeks of each sensitivity observation set; prepare interim and final reports on the same. Develop wavelength-dependent analysis for pipeline corrections, and analyze cumulative echelle exposures. (2) STIS Focus - Reconstruct sampled PSF from ACQ/PEAK fluxes at dwell points and compare profiles with previous observations. (3) WFC3 Focus - Obtain phylogram PSF metrics using J. Anderson's wfc3uv_findfocus code and use empirical relations between the phylogram values and phase retrieval despace (ongoing work by L. Dressel) to obtain focus values for the WFC3 parallels.
