Vehicles passing a bicycle traveling the same direction shall leave a safe distance between the motor vehicle and the bicycle of not less than three feet. Auburn City Code Section 22-13
Limitations on overtaking on left.
No vehicle shall be driven to the left side of the center of the roadway in overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction unless such left side is clearly visible and is free of oncoming traffic for a sufficient distance ahead to permit such overtaking and passing to be completely made without interfering with the operation of any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction or any vehicle overtaken. In every event the overtaking vehicle must return to an authorized lane of travel as soon as practicable and in the event the passing movement involves the use of a lane authorized for vehicles approaching from the opposite direction, before coming within 200 feet of any approaching vehicle.

Statistics

  • Tiger Transit operates seven on-campus routes and 15 off-campus routes.
  • The Auburn University Night Security Shuttle transports an average of about 205 passengers per night. More than 176,000 passengers were transported between August 2009 and March 2010.
  • During the January 2015 to December 2015 time period, Tiger Transit provided transportation for 2.4 million passengers.

The Lee-Russell Public Transit, or LRPT, formerly LETA, offers a form of public transit called Dial-a-Ride services in Lee and Russell County. It is available to citizens for a small fee and free to Auburn University students. Visit www.lrcog.com/LETA.html to find out more about LRPT services available.
Auburn University offers transit services, known as Tiger Transit, to faculty, staff and students of the university. For more information, visit www.auburn.edu/transit.
In partnership with the Student Government Association, the Tiger Ten bus routes provide alternate transportation during late night hours on Friday and Saturday nights when classes are in session during the fall and spring semesters. The Auburn University Campus Security Shuttle offers a safe ride from any on-campus location to any other on-campus location from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. seven days a week while classes are in session, except for home football game evenings and official Auburn University holidays. Other

Points to Remember

    • Golf carts are not allowed on streets unless they meet specific safety requirements.
    • The use of skateboards, longboards and the like (mini-cruisers) is permitted on campus on the shared-use corridors (defined as sidewalks equal to or wider than 10 feet) if operated in a safe manner and if the corridors are not heavily congested with pedestrians. More information on the Auburn University skateboard policy is available on the Traffic and Parking Regulations.
    • Skateboards are not allowed on the downtown sidewalks.
    • Motorized vehicles are not allowed on multi-use paths.

Every person riding a bicycle upon a roadway shall be granted all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle. Section 32-5A-260

(a)Every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable. (b) Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles. (c) Wherever a usable path for bicycles has been provided adjacent to a roadway, bicycle riders shall use such path and not use the roadway. Section 32-5A-263

Every bicycle when in use at nighttime shall be equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front and with a red reflector on the rear which shall be visible from all distances from 100 feet to 600 feet to the rear. A lamp emitting a red light visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear may be used in addition to the rear reflector. Section 32-5A-265

University Regulations

Bicycles shall not be ridden on sidewalks. Paths that are 10 feet or wider are considered shared use paths, for use by all non-motorized traffic.

Pedestrians

Statistics

      • Studies show that pedestrians walking in dark colored clothing at night are first seen approximately 55 feet away-giving the driver traveling at 25 mph less than one second reaction time. A driver traveling at 25 mph needs over 150 feet to stop safely.

City Ordinances

All walkers or joggers running or walking during hours of darkness must wear reflective material between the waist and shoulders on their front and back that give an indication of the walker’s or jogger’s presence through reflected light from the head lamp beams of motor vehicles at a distance of a minimum of five hundred (500) feet. Auburn City Code Section 13-11
(a) When traffic-control signals are not in place or not in operation the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger.
(b) No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard.
(c) Subsection (a) shall not apply under the conditions stated in Section 32-5A-212(b).
(d) Whenever any vehicle is stopped at a marked crosswalk or at any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway, the driver of any other vehicle approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass such stopped vehicle.
Auburn City Code Section 32-5A-211 (Acts 1980, No. 80-434, p. 604, §5-102.)
(a) Every pedestrian crossing a roadway at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway.
(b) Any pedestrian crossing a roadway at a point where a pedestrian tunnel or overhead pedestrian crossing has been provided shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway.
(c) Between adjacent intersections at which traffic-control signals are in operation pedestrians shall not cross at any place except in a marked crosswalk.
(d) No pedestrian shall cross a roadway intersection diagonally unless authorized by official traffic-control devices; and, when authorized to cross diagonally, pedestrians shall cross only in accordance with the official traffic-control devices pertaining to such crossing movements.
Auburn City Code Section 32-5A-212 (Acts 1980, No. 80-434, p. 604, §5-103.)
(a) Where a sidewalk is provided and its use is practicable, it shall be unlawful for any pedestrian to walk along and upon an adjacent roadway.
(b) Where a sidewalk is not available, any pedestrian walking along and upon a highway shall walk only on a shoulder, as far as practicable from the edge of the roadway.
(c) Where neither a sidewalk nor a shoulder is available any pedestrian walking along and upon a highway shall walk as near as practicable to an outside edge of the roadway, and if on a two-way roadway, shall walk only on the left side of the roadway. Ride with traffic; walk against traffic.
(d) Except as otherwise provided in this chapter, any pedestrian upon a roadway shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway.
