Zeichnen zieht nicht nur die Hand, sondern schult vor allem auch die Beobachtungsgabe. Wie Goethe sagte: „Zeichnen nötigt zur Aufmerksamkeit, und sie ist doch die höchste aller Fertigkeiten und Tugenden“. Zeichnung ist neben Sprache und Gesten (Tanz) einer der schnellsten und direktesten Wege, sich auszudrücken. Es schult die genaue Beobachtung, und den Studierenden wird zugleich ein Werkzeug in die Hand gegeben, Dinge visuell zu formulieren, von der ersten Notation bis zur ausgearbeiteten Zeichnung und zur gezeichneten Bewegung. In diesem Seminar stehen Studien des menschlichen Körpers in stillen Posen und in Bewegung im Vordergrund. Auch werden wir eine Reihe von Techniken und Materialien untersuchen, die auf der Oberfläche Spuren hinterlassen.

Das renommierte Animafest Zagreb veranstaltet neben einem internationalen Programm mit Kurzfilmen, Abschlussfilmen, TV-Produktionen und Spielfilmen auch kompakte Animations- Workshops, Ausstellungen und Seminareinheiten mit Vertretern des Festivals und der Filmbranche, die uns besondere Einblicke in die Welt des Animationsfilms gewähren. Animafest Zagreb ist ein Ort der Inspiration, Kreativität und des Austauschs von Ideen, ein Ort der Innovation, Kommunikation und internationalen Vielfalt. Diese Exkursion richtet sich an Studierende im Hauptstudium, die sich im engeren Sinne mit Animation befassen.

During this seminar, the production of an animated film will take place in collaboration with various schools around the world. The premise is as follows: A Martian arrives on planet Earth and conducts a study on human behaviour, addressing topics such as love, human relationships, nature, technology, art, power, and religions, as well as the meaning of art and money, among others. The title of this seminar pays homage to the novel of the same name, "The Martian Chronicles" by Ray Bradbury, a work published in 1950 during the Cold War that narrates how humans invade Mars, fleeing a world on the brink of destruction and under the threat of nuclear conflict. In our case, we reverse the roles and eliminate the belligerent and destructive impulse. Our Martian is a reporter and explorer in the tradition of Herodotus, a peaceful character with the broadest tolerance who travels through planet Earth guided by curiosity and the objective of assessing the feasibility or interest in establishing some form of embassy or relationship with humans. The participating schools are (KHM) Kunsthochschule der Medien in Cologne, (CAFA) Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China, (NID) National Institute of Design in Andhra Pradesh, India, and (CAU) Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli, Naples, Italy. Additionally, Vilnius Art Academy in Lithuania is also part of the collaboration.

Students will be familiarized with such techniques--relevant to the expanded field of animation--as motion capture, 3D scanning, augmented and virtual reality, interaction, character automation and other creative AI techniques. These artistic - technical focus areas are essential in addressing an array of resounding issues weighing on the whole field of computer graphics: (1.) Dilemma between representing real and signifying it. Specifically, when it is necessary, fruitful or appropriate to strive for a hyper-real mode of representation and when usage of stylized graphic language is more effective. (2.) Neural networks, deep learning and its feasibility and narrative implications in creation of autonomous animated agents (3.) Orientation-disorientation in VR. Navigation in 3D space (4.) An “uncanny valley” (UV) phenomenon plaguing 3D animation since introduction of powerful reality-mimicking methodology. UV is not only a result of hyper-realistic humanoid design but also a problem of recreating the human-like locomotion. (5.) VR as an extended collaborative framework. (6.) Forensic design. Effect of evidence-based scanning on content creation.

In diesem Forum werden Projekte aus den verschiedenen Bereichen der Animation und experimentellen Games vorgestellt und besprochen. Die Student*innen sind aufgefordert, in bestimmten Zeitabschnitten, den jeweiligen Entwicklungsstand ihrer Projekte vom Konzept bis zur abgeschlossenen Produktion zu präsentieren und zur Diskussion zu stellen. Ergänzend werden historische und aktuelle Animationsfilme und Computerspiele, als auch raumspezifische Disziplinen wie Theater, Tanz und Installationen gezeigt, um Parallelen und Unterschiede der verschiedenen Medien aufzuzeigen und um die Studierenden mit verschiedenen Produktionsverfahren und künstlerischen Gestaltungsmitteln vertraut zu machen. Die Beispiele werden möglichst so gewählt, dass ein direkter Bezug zu den aktuellen Arbeiten der Studierenden hergestellt werden kann.

This will be a third summer-school type event in the series of AI driven animation. This time, it will be hosted by Vilnius Gediminas Technical University with a planned participation of student-teacher teams from Tampere University of Applied Sciences, FH Köln (KISD), University of Porto and us, the KHM. The focus of this event will be on usage of AI such as Stable Diffusion (SD) and similar in order to create sequences of moving images. As notoriously unpredictable tool, SD presents a challenge but also offers an opportunity in rethinking the role of the author when it comes to artistic control of the form and specifically in shaping cohesive flow of images, adding up to a meaningful narration. In the course of the summer school each team is expected to complete a short project which will be publicly screened in Vilnius.

The focus of this academic block is on contemporary aesthetic transgressions into the fields of ethics, politics and other communicative acts. Animation, in a very expanded sense and in a wide overlap with film, being a starting point of our investigations, will take us further into the realm of artistic practices driven by such discursive strategies as “art as experience” and also the fields of non-representationalism and everyday aesthetics, action-oriented aesthetics, relational aesthetics and etc. Our academic travail will lead us through Lacanian triad, and into Badiou’s intersection of finitude by infinity, and quite likely beyond…
