As open-access (OA) publishing funded by articleprocessing charges (APCs) becomes more widely accepted, academic institutions need to be aware of the "total cost of publication" (TCP), comprising subscription costs plus APCs and additional administration costs. This study analyzes data from 23 UK institutions covering the period 2007-2014 modeling the TCP. It shows a clear rise in centrally managed APC payments from 2012 onward, with payments projected to increase further. As well as evidencing the growing availability and acceptance of OA publishing, these trends reflect particular UK policy developments and funding arrangements intended to accelerate the move toward OA publishing ("Gold" OA). Although the mean value of APCs has been relatively stable, there was considerable variation in APC prices paid by institutions since 2007. In particular, "hybrid" subscription/OA journals were consistently more expensive than fully OA journals. Most APCs were paid to large "traditional" commercial publishers who also received considerable subscription income. New administrative costs reported by institutions varied considerably. The total cost of publication modeling shows that APCs are now a significant part of the TCP for academic institutions, in 2013 already constituting an average of 10% of the TCP (excluding administrative costs).
A comprehensive and critical literature review was conducted to examine the information needs and source preferences of women with breast cancer and their family members. Relevant papers published between 1988 and 1998 were reviewed and despite their having several methodological weaknesses, a number of conclusions can still be drawn. First, women with breast cancer have distinct needs for information throughout their breast cancer journeys, indicating that information needs change with time since diagnosis and with treatment-related events. Second, family members of women with breast cancer also have substantial needs for information. Third, women with breast cancer and their family members often prefer verbal forms of information from health care professionals (HCPs), particularly around the time of diagnosis. Women with breast cancer, however, are often dissatisfied with the information they receive from HCPs. Further, the family members of women with breast cancer often perceive their information needs to be ignored by HCPs. Finally, few studies have focused specifically on the information needs and source preferences of family members of women with breast cancer. These findings have a number of implications for nursing, both for clinical practice and nursing research, and these are discussed in the review.
This paper reviews the worldwide growth of open-access (OA) repositories, December 2005 to December 2012, using data collected by the OpenDOAR project. It shows that initial repository development was focused on North America, Western Europe and Australasia, particularly the USA, UK, Germany and Australia. Soon after, Japan increased its repository numbers. Since 2010, other geographical areas and countries have seen repository growth, including East Asia (especially Taiwan), South America (especially Brazil) and Eastern Europe (especially Poland). During the whole period, countries such as France, Italy and Spain have maintained steady growth, whereas countries such as China and Russia have experienced relatively low levels of growth. Globally, repositories are predominantly institutional, multidisciplinary and English-language-based. They typically use opensource OAI-compliant repository software but remain immature in terms of explicit licensing arrangements. Whilst the size of repositories is difficult to assess accurately, the available data indicate that a small number of large repositories and a large number of small repositories make up the repository landscape. These trends and characteristics are analyzed using Innovation Diffusion Theory (IDT) building on previous studies. IDT is shown to provide a useful explanatory framework for understanding repository adoption at various levels: global, national, organizational and individual. Major factors affecting both the initial development of repositories and their take up by users are identified, including IT infrastructure, language, cultural factors, policy initiatives, awareness-raising activity and usage mandates. It is argued that mandates in particular are likely to play a crucial role in determining future repository development.2
Poor communication between the non-English speaking Somali women and health workers was perceived as an underlying problem in seeking information. Fears about misinterpretation and confidentiality, limit the usefulness of interpreters. The Somali women perceived that they were denied information due to punitive attitudes and prejudiced views among health professionals.
Purpose: This chapter provides an overview of the specific legal, ethical, and privacy issues that can arise when conducting research using Twitter data.
Approach:We review existing literature to inform those whom may be undertaking social media research. We also present a number of industry and academic case studies in order to highlight the challenges that may arise in research projects using social media data. Finally, the chapter provides an overview of the process that was followed to gain ethics approval for a PhD project using Twitter as a primary source of data.Practical Implications: By outlining a number of Twitter-specific research case studies the chapter is a valuable resource to those considering the ethical implications of their own research projects utilizing social media data. Moreover, the chapter outlines existing work looking at the ethical practicalities of social media data, and relates their applicability to researching Twitter.Value: This chapter is a potentially useful resource to those conducting social media research, or those who wish to gain an understanding of the specific legal, ethical, and privacy issues that can face social media researchers.
Background
Infectious disease outbreaks have the potential to cause a high number of fatalities and are a very serious public health risk.
Objectives
Our aim was to utilise an indepth method to study a period of time where the H1N1 Pandemic of 2009 was at its peak.
Methods
A data set of n = 214 784 tweets was retrieved and filtered, and the method of thematic analysis was used to analyse the data.
Results
Eight key themes emerged from the analysis of data: emotion and feeling, health related information, general commentary and resources, media and health organisations, politics, country of origin, food, and humour and/or sarcasm.
Discussion
A major novel finding was that due to the name ‘swine flu’, Twitter users had the belief that pigs and pork could host and/or transmit the virus. Our paper also considered the methodological implications for the wider field of library and information science as well as specific implications for health information and library workers.
Conclusions
Novel insights were derived on how users communicate about disease outbreaks on social media platforms. Our study also provides an innovative methodological contribution because it was found that by utilising an indepth method it was possible to extract greater insight into user communication.
