Andrew Schneider

Andrew Schneider is the senior reporter for politics and government at Houston Public Media, NPR’s affiliate station in Houston, Texas. In this capacity, he heads the station’s coverage of national, state, and local elections. He also reports on major policy issues before the Texas Legislature and county and city governments across Greater Houston. He spearheaded the station’s coverage of the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, as well as the participation of Texans in the January 6 insurrection.

Before taking up his current post, Andrew spent five years as Houston Public Media’s business reporter, covering the oil and gas industry and other issues affecting the regional and state economies. He has also served as the station’s occasional foreign correspondent, reporting from Afghanistan in 2013 and Germany in 2015.

Andrew’s work has aired nationally on NPR’s Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Here & Now and on American Public Media’s Marketplace Morning Report, as well as internationally on the BBC World Service and Radio New Zealand.

Before moving to Houston, Andrew spent more than a dozen years in Washington, D.C., most of that time as a reporter for Kiplinger Washington Editors‘ flagship publication, The Kiplinger Letter. While there, Andrew led Kiplinger’s reporting and analysis of foreign affairs, global economics, and international trade. He covered major stories including the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars, the rise of China as an economic superpower, and the 2008 global financial collapse. He also found time to volunteer with the National Press Club, chairing the club’s speakers and book & author committees.

Andrew holds degrees in history from the University of Chicago and Duke University. He was born in Inglewood, California and grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts and Jericho, New York. His hobbies include creative writing, watching classic movies, and ballroom dancing.
