Anti-malware Software is Required

As part of NYU IT's commitment to protect our community's information and systems, and in compliance with the Data and System Security Policy, anti-malware software is required on any desktop or laptop computer connecting to NYU's network (NYU-NET).

Who Uses Malwarebytes?

All NYU community members accessing the NYU network must have anti-malware software installed on their personally-owned computer. If you do not already have anti-malware software installed on your personally-owned computer, please install Malwarebytes. Doing so will help protect the NYU network and keep your personal information safe.

Anyone with a valid NYU NetID who has access to NYUHome, except alumni, is eligible to claim and install a license.

Getting Started

Do not install Malwarebytes on a computer owned by NYU. This software is for personally-owned computers only. If you have an NYU-owned computer, read Secure Your Computer for more information.

To install Malwarebytes on your personally-owned computer, log in to NYUHome
Visit the Malwarebytes card and click GO
Enter your NetID email address (e.g., aqe123@nyu.edu) and click Claim Malwarebytes License
Select Malwarebytes Premium, then Add a device. Choose your current device or another device
- If you select another device, enter your email address and select Send Invite.
Follow the prompts to install Malwarebytes

Malwarebytes FAQs

Do I need Malwarebytes if I already have anti-malware software on my personally-owned computer?

No. It is not recommended to install more than one anti-malware software at a time.

Can non-degree students at NYU use Malwarebytes on their personally-owned computer?

Yes. NYU students currently enrolled in coursework are entitled to one Malwarebytes license for use on a personally-owned computer.

How long is my Malwarebytes license valid? What happens if I graduate?

You can check your license's expiration date by viewing your license key. The Malwarebytes license will be automatically renewed by NYU if you still meet the eligibility criteria. You will not need to take action.

If you have graduated or are otherwise no longer eligible, your license will not be renewed.

How do I request access?

You do not need to request access. If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can follow the Getting Started instructions to install Malwarebytes.

May I request a second license to use on a second personally-owned device?

No, we provide only one license per eligible NYU user.

Which operating systems is Malwarebytes compatible with?

Malwarebytes is compatible with Windows, MacOS, or Chromebook OS.

I need help installing Malwarebytes. Whom can I contact?

Contact Malwarebytes directly by visiting their support page and using the chat feature.

If I install Malwarebytes will NYU have access to my personal computer?

No. The personal license we provide is managed by the vendor, Malwarebytes. Installing the software on your personally-owned computer does not grant NYU access to anything on it.

Are NYU alumni eligible for Malwarebytes?

No. Alumni cannot download an NYU-issued Malwarebytes license. If you already have Malwarebytes installed on your personally-owned computer and are graduating, your license will not be renewed by NYU when it expires.
