Insurance Information for Graduating Students

You will not have access to services at the SHC after May 31, 2024, and therefore no referral will be required for services outside of the SHC. Make plans for your continued care in advance. For additional information contact the NYU SHC Insurance Department at health.graduatingstudent@nyu.edu.

Existing prescriptions at the SHC Pharmacy can be transferred to a local or hometown pharmacy for refill. Contact the pharmacy where you want your prescription transferred, provide them with the name of your medication, and ask them to call the SHC Pharmacy at (212) 443-1050.  

*Please note, due to New York State law, the NYU SHC Pharmacy can only transfer one refill per month.  Most pharmacies out of New York State will close your prescription and you may lose the rest of the prescription if there are additional refills.

If you're under 26 and your parents have insurance, you could stay on your parent's plan. (Note: If your parent is on an employer plan, you may only have 30 days to sign up.)

Your spouse may be able to add you to their plan. (Note: If your spouse is on an employer plan, you may only have 30 days to sign up.)

Already have a job lined up? Check if they have an insurance plan and when it becomes effective.

Sign up for your own plan on HealthCare.gov. Tax credits could be available to reduce your monthly costs.

When is open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act marketplace?
Open enrollment for coverage starting on August 1 runs from June 16 through July 15.

When must I submit my application for an August 1 enrollment in a marketplace plan?
An application for coverage must be submitted on or before the 15th of the month preceding the 1st day of the month you want coverage to begin. For example, if you want marketplace coverage beginning August 1, 2024, you must submit an electronic application on or before July 15, 2024.

What should I do if my state does not allow being covered at the same time by both the NYU Student Health Insurance Plan and the state marketplace plan I am applying for?
If you experience this barrier during the application process, please contact the NYU Student Health Insurance Department at health.graduatingstudent@nyu.edu. Open enrollment requirements for state-run marketplaces may vary.

If you have no or low income, you may be eligible for free Medicaid coverage in certain states.
