Abstract
In view of the structural resemblance between glycoalkaloids found in plants of the genus Solanum and the veratrum alkaloids, the possible hypotensive activity of crude extracts of S. marginatum was determined in anesthetized rats. The whole plant methanolic extract produced immediate marked hypotension and bradycardia which persisted for 60 min. An aqueous extract of the above, as well as a methanolic fruit extract produced only transient effects. Oral administration of the active material to conscious renal hypertensive rats produced a significant fall in blood pressure lasting between 4 and 6 h. The hypotensive activity observed was tentatively attributed to compounds of intermediate polarity, possibly glycoalkaloids or non-alkaloidal glycosides. No information as to the possible “veratrum-like” nature of these effects could be derived from the present experiments.
