Abstract

Further bioactivity-guided fractionation of a chloroform extract of the twigs of Agrostistachys hookeri against cultured P-388 lymphocytic leukemia cells, has led to the isolation of a cytotoxic ellagic acid derivative, 3,3′,4-O-trimethylellagic acid (1), and three inactive compounds, consisting of a new compound, 3,4,5,5′-O-tetramethyl-3′,4′-O,O-methylidenecoruleoellagic acid (2), and the known compounds, 3,4,5-O-trimethyl-3′,4′-O,O-methylideneflavellagic acid (3) and betulinic acid. The structure of the novel coruleoellagic acid derivative (2) was established by comparison of its spectral parameters with those of known ellagic acid derivatives.
