Number of residential construction starts in Japan 2014-2023, by structure

In 2023, there were around 454.4 thousand construction starts for wooden structure dwellings in Japan. Wood as a building material has a long tradition in Japan, and single-family homes with wooden structures are still the norm. Houses with wooden structures are estimated to last around 30 years by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism.
