Yoga participation in the U.S. 2010-2023
In 2023, the number of people doing yoga in the United States continued a downward trend which began in the previous year. In 2022, around 34 million U.S. Americans reported having done yoga at least once in that year. By 2023, that number had declined to roughly 33.64 million, denoting a 1.8 percent decrease in yoga participants in the North American country between 2022 and 2023.
Practicing yoga at home
During the practice of yoga, participants use yoga mats as an aid for their exercises. In 2021, a quarter of survey participants were found to have owned a yoga mat for home fitness in the U.S., making the items more popular than weight benches, home cycling machines, and pull-up bars that year. Yoga mats were also popular home fitness products during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, with 13 percent of respondents claiming to have purchased a yoga mat during the global health crisis.
Wellness industry in the U.S.
The wellness industry refers to activities which promote a healthy lifestyle by maintaining people’s physical and mental wellbeing. Not only are yoga and pilates studios popular within the industry, they generate billions in revenue as well. In 2021, the market size of the pilates and yoga studios in the U.S. amounted to nearly 9.9 billion U.S. dollars. Overall, there were about 39 thousand yoga and pilates businesses in the U.S. in that year.
