Grand Slam tournaments
The four Grand Slam tournaments are the most important competitions in the tennis world. They are Australian Open in Melbourne, the French Open (or Roland-Garros) in Paris, Wimbledon in London, and the U.S. Open in New York. Margaret Court was the female player with the most Grand Slam titles as of 2024, with 24. In second place was Serena Williams, who came within touching distance of Court's record before retiring in 2022. Meanwhile, in the men's game, Novak Djokovic was the male player with the most trophies at this level.
The number one spot
The WTA and ATP rankings are calculated by adding points obtained from participating in their respective official tournaments. Larger and more prestigious competitions give out more points, with the four Grand Slams on top. Between 1975 and 2023, the female tennis player with the most time as number one in the ranking was Stefanie “Steffi” Graf. The German athlete spent 377 weeks on the top. On the men's ranking, the Serbian Novak Djokovic held the record, with 405 weeks.
